History

Gift
Realizing the need for understanding and communication between peoples of varying nationalities and cultures as methods of preserving world peace and hoping to increase international awareness, the University of North Carolina Class of 1938 is proud and happy to present to the University of North Carolina an endowment to further these aims. Having matured during the second World War, having participated in the agonies which it produced, having witnessed the loss of life of its own members and their loved ones as a result of this war, having seen the world-wide suffering resulting from this conflict, and observing the continued tensions and conflicts between nations of the world, the Class of 1938 feels compelled to do what it can to prevent future world conflicts and to promote world peace. For these reasons, the Class of 1938 makes its gift to its beloved University of North Carolina.

Fellows
In 1975, the UNC-Chapel Hill Class of 1938 selected the first two students to benefit from its extraordinary gift to its alma mater. Three decades later, the Class of 1938 Endowment has touched the lives of over 140 students. Class of 1938 fellows have visited over 40 countries, pursued projects and interests in everything from music to geology, and begun to develop an understanding of planet Earth’s wonderful and infinite diversity. During this time, the fellows have also begun to fulfill another part of the vision of the Class of 1938: that recipients of the gift and members of the Class of 1938 Endowment Committee keep their dream alive by upholding the spirit and intent of the Class of 1938 Endowment, fostering a spirit of commitment and cooperation among current and future Endowment Committee members, and making it possible for their gift to touch other lives as profoundly as it has touched those of the recipients.

Fellows serve on a board to help administer the fellowship, are voting members of the Endowment Committee, maintain a newsletter with updates on the activities of former fellows, and attend the spring meeting during which new recipients are selected each year.
