CONVERSATION PARTNERS

Befriend an International Student! UNC-Chapel Hill has international students who would like to improve their English conversation skills and ability with the help of an American friend like you.

ISSS needs volunteer Partners who will meet once a week with an international partner:

• for one hour
• one-to-one
• at a mutually convenient time and place.

In this informal, flexible, friendly program you can help your Student Partner:

• adjust to a new culture
• gain confidence
• find answers to questions
• feel at home in a new land
• have conversations in English.

You, in turn, will gain insights into another part of the world and its culture.

All conversations are in English. You need not know another language. We have a packet of guidelines for you, but your willingness to take part is a most important ingredient in the success of this program. If you are a good listener, speak English clearly, and are patient and cheerful, then you qualify. All Conversation Partners are invited to an Information Session in September to discover some useful skills for cross cultural interaction.

We have many students from the countries of Asia, and some from Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. They value the chance to speak English, however haltingly, with a trusted American friend.
