In this section, there is information on the most common immigration statuses that are used for academic staff at the University. These statuses are: F-1 Students on Optional Practical Training, J-1 Exchange Visitor, H-1B Temporary Worker, O-1 Alien of Extraordinary Ability, TN Trade NAFTA, and Permanent Residence. Non-U.S. Citizens in these statuses are often referred to as "scholars" at UNC-Chapel Hill. Other helpful information for incoming and current international scholars can also be found in this section. New international scholars should especially note the information on planning and expanding your UNC-Chapel Hill experience.

Note! Please see What's New: Consular Updates for information on how the events of September 11th will affect Visa issuance and entry into the U.S. for international scholars and students.

Check-in
Photo: Academic StaffOnce a scholar has arrived in Chapel Hill they should check-in at International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). Every international student and scholar joining UNC-Chapel Hill is required to check-in before classes or employment begins. In order to complete a "check-in" a scholar should bring with them the following documents: passport, visa document (I-20 or DS-2019) and I-94 (Admission/Departure card). At this time a scholar will be asked to fill out the PR-100 (Information Form), and copies of their documents will be made. The Office of International Student and Scholar Services staff can assist scholars with any questions or concerns that they might have at this time. At check-in scholars will be receive a check-in packet and information regarding upcoming events.

During check-in scholars will be given instructions on how to apply for the Social Security Number, how to take advantage of a tax treaty, and what documents are needed to be put on UNC-Chapel Hill payroll, etc.

Departure Notice
If a scholar is leaving UNC-Chapel Hill, then International Student and Scholar Services needs to know. Scholars departing UNC-Chapel Hill must complete the Departure Notice and fax, mail, or drop it off at ISSS. This form enables the University to comply with its federal requirements.
